While its shallow depth means it’s not ideal for all watersports, it’s the perfect place for a leisurely fishing trip or gentle kayak session. But it’s also easily enjoyed from the water’s edge, on a walk along the shoreline. The Lough Enell Walk, near Carrick, is a lovely 3km trail that leads you along the shore and back, with beautiful views along the way.
There are also gorgeous views of the lake, along with other walking trails, at Belvedere House. There’s a literary heritage to the lake, too. Local legend tells of the time Jonathan Swift sat on a boat upon Lough Ennell, from which he gazed back at Lilliput and remarked upon how small the people looked from a distance, thus creating the inspiration for Gulliver's Travels.
