Castletown Geoghegan is a vibrant rural village which once had its own train station. The beautiful old railway station has been lovingly restored and is now a feature on the
Old Rail Trail, a 43km greenway from Athlone to Mullingar, passing through Castletown Geoghegan. The greenway traces the historic Midlands Great Western Railway track, past restored station houses and under pretty stone arched bridges. Linking Athlone Castle and the River Shannon with the Royal Canal in Mullingar, it passes through areas of unique biodiversity and heritage along the way.
Although visitor access onto the motte at Castletown Geoghegan is not available, this intriguing feature is visible from the road; a mythical earthen mound covered in grass and crowned with a flat top. Mottes were the raised platforms on which castles were built.
The Forge Pizza and Cafe is located in Castletown Geoghegan Village and popular as a relaxed venue with guaranteed delicious pizza.
