Clonmellon was built in the late eighteenth century by Sir Benjamin Chapman. By 1837 Clonmellon was established as a market town. The village has a distinctive broad Main Street which, and a beautiful old Market Square.
Clonmellon Market Square
A bustling market square is at the heart of every picturesque village. In Clonmellon, this neighbourhood hub has everything you could ask for – charming old stone buildings, an open courtyard and a thriving sense of community. The market square dates back to 1835, when it was built by the Chapman Family of the nearby Killua Castle – apparently, the gateway to the square was actually moved from the castle itself, back in 1845.
The village of Clonmellon has quite the history, too – it’s said to have once been the home of Sir Walter Raleigh, who planted the first potatoes in Ireland in the very same Killua Castle.
