Delvin is a village approximately 20km from Mullingar town.
Walk through the village of Delvin, and you’ll find the curved tower walls of the castle on the side of main street, giving a window into medieval times alongside our modern world. This original structure was built in the 15
th century, but now only the ruins remain.
While you can’t currently visit the interior or the grounds of the castle, the two remaining flanking tower walls give us an insight into the chequered history of this tale. Both the lower floor and corner towers were divided into cells in the 18
th or early 19
th centuries, which leads to the theory that the castle was once used as a prison.
A second castle was built several centuries later, hundreds of metres from the centre of the Delvin settlement of that time. This building, known as Clonyn Castle, is situated south of Delvin between the N52 and the Collinstown road.
Killua Castle is a historic castle located in the most romantic demesne in Ireland with links to Sir Walter Raleigh and Lawrence of Arabia.
