Kilbeggan, like Mullingar, is located on the River Brosna – here the river has been harnessed to power the water-wheel of the local distillery.  The town lies south of Lough Ennel and quite close to the Offaly border and the nearest villages being Rahugh, Ballinagore and Tyrellspass.  Kilbeggan is also on the line of the Esker Riada the great chain of eskers which were deposited across central Ireland after the last Ice-Age.

As mentioned above Kilbeggan is home to the world's oldest whiskey distillery, Kilbeggan Whiskey  established in 1757 and still makes one of Ireland’s finest whiskeys.  From the creaking timber water wheel, to our giant steam engine, a guided tour of this distillery will transport you back two centuries and captivate your senses.

Located on the outskirst of Kilbeggan sits Kilbeggan Racecourse  one of four National Hunt (jumps) racecourses. As popular a racing venue as there is in the country, Kilbeggan is very much a summer track and the valuable Midlands National Handicap Chase is a recognised trial for the Galway Plate and other major festival races.
