The only Franciscan Abbey in Ireland still standing on the footprint of its original foundation, the Franciscan fraternity continues its commitment of service from this special place. With a dramatic backstory that can be traced all the way back to 1268, Multyfarnham Friary is a church with a palpable sense of history. It’s a pretty incredible thought, as you sit on the pews within the striking interior of the abbey, that people have worshipped here for 700 years. But as well as worship, the friary has seen battle and hardship, from the suppression of the abbey ordered by King Henry VIII, to the attack and subsequent blaze in 1601.

A visit to Multyfarnham would not be complete without experiencing Lough Owel, one of Westmeath's designated bathing areas. Lough Owel is rich in terms of wildlife, the lake and the fringing wetland habitats support a  vast array of rare plant species and bird populations of considerable interest.

Abbey Blooms Botanical Gardens, situated just one kilometre outside the rural village of Multyfarnham, to the rear the Franciscan Friary. While visiting the fabulous Botanical Gardens why not enjoy great coffee and delectable treats & tasty sandwiches. Relax in the garden gazebos and enjoy your coffee while taking in the gardens, seating is outdoors but is sheltered to protect from the weather.  Also on site is a garden shop where you can pick up some plants to bring home with you.
