There are 3 designated wild swimming areas in some of the loveliest lakes in Ireland.

Westmeath’s lakes are internationally renowned for their biodiversity and scenic qualities. With lots of walking trails, heritage sites on our lakeshores, there are plenty of opportunities to soak in their scenic beauty. Or get out on the water with a boat tour, wild swim or stand- up paddleboard adventure.

Here are two suggested lakeshore adventures for you to enjoy in Westmeath, each with a cluster of fantastic activities and accommodation options nearby.

Lake adventure option #1

Belvedere House, Gardens and Park on the Lough Ennel shores includes a stunning Georgian country house that dates to 1740 and which shares its story of opulence and splendour, sadness and joy. Mollie Moos Pet Farm offers a fantastic day out for families, groups and school tours.  It's a great opportunity to interact with both farm animals and exotic animals. Children are provided with a bag of food to feed the animals. It is both an educational and fun experience.

Viking Tours Ireland, The River Shannon Viking Boat tours are truly a signature experience of the midlands region and a 'must do' on your visit to Athlone, in Westmeath. The River Shannon is the main artery through the country and as we know the Vikings arrived by river in Clonmacnoise in 842 which is 90 minutes downstream from Athlone and by ship is the perfect way to approach this famous monastic site. The Lough Ree Cruise (approx 75 minutes) goes upstream to the lake calling en route to the Hodson Bay and returns. You can board the Viking Ship which departs from the quayside at Athlone Castle to Lough Ree the 'Lake of the Kings' or Clonmacnoise(see website for schedule).
